The Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 201st Support Battalion was originally approved for wear by the 8th Medical Regiment on 2 March 1934. It was redesignated for the 8th Medcal Battalion on 28 November 1939, then redesignated yet again for the 1st Medical Battalion on 6 August 1940. It remained unchanged following that flurry of activity for nearly 30 years, and even when it was modified on 16 June 1967 it was simply to add the motto IM OMNIA PROMPTUS, which translates into English as “Ready For Everything.”

Another twenty years would elapse before it was altered yet again, this time on 5 June 1987 to amend the description and symbolism so it would apply to the 201st Support Battalion, the latest unit to wear the design.

The 201st Support Battalion unit crest features a silver chief (upper portion) and maroon shield, reflecting the unit’s heritage from the Medical Department. A bear is a symbol of the state of California—the 8th Medical Regiment was formed at Camp Fremont in California—and the cross is the cross of Malta. This style of cross was employed by the world’s first organization dedicated to military medicine, the Knights Hospitalers of Saint John of Jerusalem, established in 1118.
