The 2nd Engineer Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia (unit crest) was first approved on 13 February 1925 for the 2nd Engineer Regiment, but was redesignated on 26 February 1940 for 2nd Engineer Battalion (Combat). It was redesignated twice more, once in January 1954 (for the 2nd Engineer Combat Battalion) and again 15 July 1958 for the 2nd Engineer Battalion.

The insignia combines elements of the 2nd Engineer coat of arms, which dates back to August 1861 and the formation of Companies C and D, Battalion of Engineers was organized. The black embattlement is standard heraldic design for Engineer units indicating defensive fortifications, while the crossed oars and anchor is taken from the badge of the Engineers and Pontoniers of the Army of the Potomac. The battalion is credited with participation in almost every Civil War campaign in the Eastern theater, from the Peninsula offensive in 1862 to the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse.

In the 20th century, the Battalion took part in combat operations in World War I (six campaigns), World War II (five campaigns in the ETO), and  the Korean War (ten campaigns). It was also the recipient of a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its outstanding service during a 2010 – 2011 deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
