The 612th Engineer Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, commonly referred to as a “unit crest,” celebrates the lineage and history of the units that were organized to form the 3rd Battalion, 107th Armored Cavalry Regiment in May 1952.

An Arrowhead symbolizes the combat service of the Battalion during the assault landing at Luzon in the Philippines, with the wavy blue bar serving as an allusion to the award of the Presidential Unit Citation for that action. Two sunbursts in the upper half of the insignia refer to a pair of Philippine Presidential Unit Citations that were awarded to units in the Battalion’s lineage. The embattled bridge and archway are symbols of the Battalion’s construction capabilities; they also refer to the unit’s homes state of Ohio (“The Gateway State”). The scarlet used for the shield is the official branch color for Engineer units.

During that time and facing an armed enemy, the Battalion displayed extraordinary heroism while carrying out over 800 route-clearance missions, discovering nearly 240 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and thirty-three pieces of unexploded ordnance. In all, the Battalion destroyed over 90,000 pieces of unexploded ordnance and erected more than 28,000 barriers to increased force protection.
