The 94th Field Artillery Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia was originally approved for the 94th Armored Field Artillery Battalion on 1 August 1942. It was been redesignated numerous times for the 94th Constabulary Squadron (December 1946), 94th Field Artillery Battalion (May 1949), 94th Armored Field Artillery Battalion (October 1955), 94th Artillery Regiment (June 1963), and 94th Field Artillery Regiment (September 1971).
Scarlet and yellow are the colors of Artillery, and the charge (device) in the bottom half is a guisarme, a poleaxe-type weapon used in ancient warfare that allowed the attacker to reach enemies behind defenses, thus symbolizing one of the capabilities of Field Artillery.
The 94th Field Artillery Regiment was originally known as the 94th Field Artillery, a regiment in the Regular Army that was constituted on 1 October 1933. It became the 94th Armored Field Artillery Battalion in January 1942 and was assigned to the 4th Armored Division. It was under this designation that the unit would take part in five campaigns in the European Theater of World War II, earning a Presidential Unit Citation, two French Croix de Guerre awards and French Fourragere 1940.
The unit would undergo several redesignations during the period between World War II and the Vietnam War, the most notable being elevated to a parent regiment, the 94th Artillery, in April 1957 in the Combat Arms Regimental System. The 94th’s units would see action in fourteen Vietnam War campaigns and earn the Regiment another Presidential Unit Citation by the end of the war, at which point it had been redesignated as the 94th Field Artillery.
In 1986, the Regiment was reorganized and under the U.S. Army Regimental System. It was deployed to the Middle East in support of Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm, fighting in all three campaigns and receiving a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its exceptional performance. In less than ten years, it would find itself in the region, this time in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and once again it was the recipient of military decorations—a Presidential Unit Citation and a Meritorious Unit Commendation earned in 2003, and another Meritorious Unit Commendation for service between August 2007 and May 2008.
As of 2019, only the 1st Battalion 94th Field Artillery Regiment remains activated. It is assigned to the 17th Field Artillery Brigade and it stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Tacoma, Washington.
