The New York Army National Guard Element, Joint Force Headquarters Distinctive Unit Insignia was originally approved for several organizations of the New York National Guard— Sate Staff and Detachment and 27th Infantry Division Headquarters, Headquarters Company, and Division Headquarters Detachment, Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment Special Troops—on 9 June 1930.

The insignia was redesignated for the 42nd Replacement Company, New York National Guard on 14 November 1956, and in 1971 it was redesignated for the Headquarters (HQ) and HQ Detachment and non-color bearing units of the New York Army National Guard (ARNG) on 5 February 1971. A dozen years passed before it was redesignated for HQ, State Area Command, New York ARNG. It was finally given its current designation for the Joint Force HQ of the New York ARNG Element of the state’s National Guard on October 2003/

Sailing across a field comprising our national colors of red, white, and blue is the Half Moon, the ship in which renowned explorer Henry Hudson discovered and explored the Hudson River 1609. The Half Moon rests upon a twisted wreath of orange and blue, colors of the House of Nassau and a reference to the initial settlement of New York by the Dutch.
