Originally organized as Headquarters and Head-quarters Troop, V Army Corps in July 1918, V Corps took part in three World War I campaigns (St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, and Lorraine 1918) before it was demobilized in 1919. When it was reconstituted in 1944, it was consolidated with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, V Corps and the consolidated unit was given that designation. The Corps took part in the D-Day landings at Omaha Beach, liberating several cities after breaking out from the beachhead and eventually fighting in five European campaigns.

From 1965 to its inactivation in 2013, V Corps was based in Germany, but deployed in part to Kosovo (earning a Kosovo Air Campaign streamer) and Bosnia (where its service garnered an Army Superior Unit Award). The entire Corps took part in the invasion of Iraq in 2003, earning the first of two Meritorious Unit Commendations. After a year-long deployment to Afghanistan (2012 – 2013), the Corps was inactivated upon its return, receiving a second Army Superior Unit award for its service in reconstituting and relocating from Wiesbaden to Heidelberg in 1994 – 1995.
