With the advent of new (nuclear) weaponry and modernization of the Army, the 15th Ord Bn (Maint) was called again to active service. On 21 April 1952, the 15th Ordnance Battalion was redesignated as the 22nd Very Heavy Artillery Group and allotted to the Regular Army. Activation tool place 7 May 1952 at Sandia Base, New Mexico, with concurrent assignment to Field Command, Armed Forces Special Weapons Project. The Very Heavy Artillery Group designation was in effect for approximately one year.
