The 25th Aviation Regiment was originally constitutedon 1 February 1957 in the Regular Army as the 25th Aviation Company and assigned to the 25th Infantry Division. Activated that same day at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii, the Company would be reorganized and redesignated as the 25th Aviation Battalion on 12 August 1963. (The Regiment’s 2nd Battalion was formed as Company B two months earlier, while the 3rd Battalion would not be constituted until 1979.) The Battalion was transformed into a Regiment in May 1988 when it was redesignated as 25th Aviation (actually, the Battalion became the Regiment’s 1st Battalion) and relieved from assignment to the 25th Infantry Division.

Today, the Regiment consists of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Battalions, all assigned to the 25th Combat Aviation Brigade, 25th Infantry Division. The Regiment had a highly impressive combat record prior to the start of the War on Terrorism—two Valorous Unit Awards, two Meritorious Unit Commendations, two Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm awards, and a Republic of Vietnam Civil Action Honor Medal, First Class. But the heavy use of Aviation assets in both Operation Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom have led to the 25th Aviation’s Battalions and their individual companies earning nearly 40 Meritorious Unit Commendations since 2001.
