The Distinctive Unit Insignia, or unit crest, of the 39th Brigade Support Battalion was approved on 28 January 1971 for the 39th Support Battalion and was redesignated for the 39th Brigade Support Battalion in 2005. Scarlet and buff, the primary tones used in the insignia, are the colors traditionally used for Support units. In the center is a fret formed by the interlacing of a red saltire and a mascle (a lozenge with a lozeng-shaped hole in its center); the fret symbolizes the interlaced support the Battalion provides to combat elements. The blue mascle also is an allusion to the blue band that borders the diamond of the state flag of Arkansas and thus the Battalion’s home area. The Battalion’s enthusiasm and zeal for service are embodied in the official unit motto, “Support Spirit Success,” as well as its unofficial slogan of “Providers Never Fail.”
Formed from existing units in central Arkansas on 2 November 1967, the 39th Brigade Support Battalion was originally designated as the 39th Support Battalion and assigned to the 39th Infantry Brigade. Headquartered in Hazen, the Battalion comprised four companies (Administration, Medical, Transportation, Maintenance) in addition to its Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment.
In 1996, the Battalion was downsized by assigning Supply and Maintenance responsibilities to a single company, and in 2005 it was reorganized into its current configuration as the 39th Brigade Support Battalion. Members of the Battalion deployed in 2002 in support of the Multinational Force and Observers mission in Egypt, and since the launch of the War on Terrorism the battalion has mobilized twice (2003–2005, 2007–2008) in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. It is currently headquartered in Hazen, Arkansas.
