The 3d Cavalry Regiment (nicknamed the "Brave Rifles") is a highly mobile, combined-arms Stryker brigade combat team assigned to the III Armored Corps. Stationed at Fort Cavazos (formerly Fort Hood), Texas, it serves as a rapid-reaction reconnaissance and security force capable of deploying globally to overwhelm enemies.History and LineageFounded in 1846 as the Regiment of Mounted Riflemen, the unit has fought in 11 major conflicts, ranging from the Mexican-American War and the Indian Wars to Operation Iraqi Freedom and the war in Afghanistan. Twenty-three of its troopers, including Buffalo Bill Cody, have received the Medal of Honor.Current StructureThe regiment is composed of several specialized squadrons to provide independent, combined-arms combat operations:1st, 2nd, and 3rd Squadrons: Stryker infantry squadrons acting as the main mounted and dismounted maneuver elements.4th Squadron: A reconnaissance and surveillance (R&S) unit.Field Artillery Squadron (Steel): Provides lethal cannon artillery support.Support Squadron: Provides logistics, medical, and transportation capabilities
