The 172nd Infantry Brigade (also known as the "Blackhawk Brigade") is a historic unit of the U.S. Army. First activated in 1917, it is best known for its deployments during Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and its extensive legacy as a specialized Arctic and airborne unit in Alaska.Key Historical & Operational ErasAlaska Era (1950s–2000s): The brigade spent decades in Alaska (Fort Richardson and Fort Wainwright). It specialized in cold-weather warfare and Arctic survival, and for a time served as an airborne light infantry brigade.Stryker Transformation (2003–2006): The unit was converted into the 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team (SBCT). In August 2005, it deployed to Iraq for a grueling 16-month tour of duty in Mosul and Baghdad.Germany Era & Inactivation: In 2006, the Stryker brigade was reflagged as the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division. The 172nd was subsequently reactivated in 2008 as a mechanized infantry brigade at Grafenwöhr, Germany, until its final inactivation in 2013.
