The 189th Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, commonly called a unit crest, was originally approved while the unit was still the 189th Maintenance Battalion on 15 March 1967; it was redesignated for the 189th Support Battalion with revised symbolism and description on 16 October 1993. Its crimson flame is a reference to its past role as an Ordnance Battalion, and the crossed bolo knives allude to the New Guinea and Luzon campaigns from World War II. A golden sunburst on he blue triangle is adapted from the flag of the Philippines and signifies the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation it was awarded for its service as the 189th Ordnance Battalion.
