The 544th Maintenance Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, or unit crest, celebrates the unit’s historic Quartermaster Origins with a trivet decorated with a fleur-de-lis, commemorating the all-black 544th Quartermaster Battalion’s participation in the Normandy landings; the ornamentation’s black color is a reference to the Battalion’s service in the Army of Occupation following Germany’s surrender.

The “M” shape of the trivet is also a reference to the Maintenance function of the Battalion both then and after its redesignation as a Maintenance organization, with gold rays emanating from the center symbolizing the knowledge and enthusiasm that contributed the Battalion’s successful accomplishment of its mission. “Support The Force” is the Battalion motto.

In October 2004, the 544th Maintenance Battalion was inactivated during a ceremony held a Guidon Field at Fort Hood, Texas. The inactivation was part of the transformation of the Army’s transformation to a modular structure. Three years later, on 18 October 2007, the service of the Battalion’s Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment between March 2003 and April 2004 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom was recognized with the award of Meritorious Unit Commendation.
